Friday, July 16, 2020 – Progress Super PAC Really American became the victim of a Twitter ban on Thursday that appeared to swiftly target liberal Twitter accounts responsible for posting highly viral attack ads against President Donald Trump.
The shadow ban has stopped Really American from being found in searches unless users are already following the account. Twitter has also marked one of the Super PAC’s videos as containing “sensitive material.” That video is highly critical of Donald Trump’s handling of school re-openings in America.
The shadow ban not only targets Really American but also fellow Super PAC MeidasTouch which runs the hugely popular @MeidasTouch Twitter handle that features over 250,000 followers.
MeidasTouch was first to report the noticeable lack of reach, posting the following proof on Twitter:
At the same time, prominent social-political activist Don Winslow experienced similar treatment from Twitter. Winslow’s own viral video experienced an abrupt drop in the distribution along with the “sensitive content” message being added to his most recent Trump attack ad. Many twitter users reported not being able to see or retweet Winslow’s video. Winslow’s video was also highly critical of Donald Trump’s school re-opening plans.
Prominent Twitter accounts were quick to announce their support for the shadowbanned accounts. Webby Awards honoree Eleven Films sent the following Tweet:
With the Twitter shadow ban now in effect, it’s time to take our ads to television. CHIP IN to help us move beyond social media.
